"Uncle Charlie and Aunt Grace lived across the tracks in front of Grandma's house. Uncle Charlie was the section boss for the Rock Island Railroad and always had a lot of Mexicans working for him. He was also head of the school board. They had four children: Maudie, Glen, Leland and Erma. Maudie taught school and was my teacher in the third, fourth and fifth grades. Glen passed away many years ago. Leland, just being across the tracks, was my most constant playmate. Erma, I believe, raised a family but I never did hear much about her. Leland is living in Eskridge, KS, and did run a lumber yard."
--- Thomas George Shoemaker, 1985.
"Charles was section foreman for railroad."
