The Vinita Journal:
"Four weeks later they were housed in a dugout on the plains of Western
Kansas, where they had gone overland by wagon, leaving Indiana immediately following their wedding. They homesteaded in Norton county, and it was there home for the next six years.
"'It was there,' Lucky says, 'we got the worst scare of our entire lives --
when Sitting Bull with a bunch of his Indians came through the country, raiding and massacreeing the whites.
"'We lived about 14 miles from Logan, and I went to town one day in the
fall, and when I arrived was told Sitting Bull and a group of Indians were
going through the country killing the whites and burning their cabins.
"'I prepared to go after my wife, my brother-in-law and his family, but they
had heard of the raids shortly after I left home, and arrived in Logan before I
started. They had loaded our few belongings in a wagon and brought them with them. All the white people in the country came to Logan, and a barricade was erected and we got ready to stand them off. A scouting party went out, and learned that Sitting Bull had raided the country about 40 miles west of us, going north through the country and was evidently out of the country then.
"'That evening, a neighbor of mine told me he was going back to his cabin up the river from ours, and I told him if he didn't get there that evening, he
could stay all night at our house.
"'Mattie (his wife) and I went back home the next morning after bidding
goodbye to my brother-in-law and his wife, who were returning to Indiana.
(There were a lot of the settlers going back to other states that day). We got
home just before sundown and had built a fire in our dugout, and were seated in front of the fire that night popping corn, when suddenly the door was pushed open. A coonskin cap came peeping around the door, and I could see a rifle edging around. Mattie and I were really scared, but the man proved only to be the neighbor, who upon finding no one at his house had started back to town and decided to spend the night at our place. He didn't know that we were there, and was scared almost as badly as we when he saw us, but it was a long time before any of us went to sleep that night.'"

The Vinita Journal:
"Although for some months during that winter, the Luckys were the only
family along the river, they remained, and the following spring were joined by more brave pioneers. They remained in the Western Kansas territory until 1884, when they moved to Fort Scott, Kansas, where they resided the next 10 years.
"After their sojourn in Fort Scott, they moved to Iola, Kansas; later moving
to El Reno, Oklahoma where they operated a store from 1912 to 1926, then moved to Vinita."
