Hauko Sleper oo Meine Küper

Hugo and Meine were married at Ramsey Reformed Church by Pastor L. Walermuelder. The marriage certificate spells Hauko, Meine, and Küper. I asked Carl Meyer, who spent his boyhood in Ostfriesland, about the significance of the diacritical marks (diæresis or umlaut) above the u in Küper. He pronounced it with an almost-R sound after the u. He said without the diæresis the name would be pronounced "Cooper" and that would be wrong.
The marriage certificate, prepared by the church, is the only place where I have seen Mina spelt Meine and the only place I have seen Kuper spelt Küper. The Hauko verifies the 1900 census where Hugo's name is spelt Hauko. the 1900 census is hard to read however.

Küper with the diacritical mark on the 'u' is as it is found on the unoffical marriage document provided by Ramsey Ref. Chr. where Hugo & Meine were married. Without the diæresis (umlaut), Kuper would be pronounced 'Cooper' which would be a mispronunciation.
Mina died of cancer in her farm home in Ledyard Twp. The death certificate gives Ledyard Twp. as her place of death which corresponds with what Gertie Meyer has said verbally. After Mina's death, Gertie carried a large part of ther esponsibility of raising her younger siblings.
