Heniford Connections
John Heniford was the son of Moses Harrelson and Civil Boyd Suggs Cannon. From different marriages, there are several half siblings of John Heniford. These siblings signatures appear in the land grants of Moses Harrelson when the land was deeded over to the Heniford family, as well as Moses other children by his wife Ann. It appears that most of the names in the land transfers were kin. The following family narratives show the connections.
Civil Boyd Family
Civil Boyd married Charles Suggs and had a son William. On 9 Dec 1846 William Suggs married Anna Jane Reaves in Horry, South Carolina.
Anna Jane Reaves was the daughter of John B. Reaves and Sarah Smith.
She first married Nicholas Prince and they had a daughter Prudence Jane.
Nicholas Prince had a son Joseph J. from another marriage.
She second married William Suggs, they had the following children:
Dillon, John, Cornelius Cheatam, Alva Calhoun, Civil Melinda, Charlotte and Lorenzo Dow Suggs Sr.
John B. Reaves was the son of Mark Reaves, born in 1770 in Brunswick, NC. Mark married Spicy Ann Smith. Spicy Ann Smith was born about 1775 in Brunswick County, NC. Mark Reaves died in Horry County, South Carolina in 1819 at the age of 49.
Marks father was William Reaves who married Sarah Prudence Harrelson, born about 1735.
Sarah Prudence Harrelson was also a daughter of Paul Jr. Harrelson and Patience Lewis and sister of Joseph Harrelson.
Moses Harrelson Family
Moses Harrelson was born about 1765 and married Ann Unknown. They had the following children:
Moses, Lewis, Susanah, and Josiah. Moses died on April 9th, 1828.
Moses father was Josiah L. Harrelson. Josiah was born about 1750 in the Washington District of South Carolina. He married Mary Vick and died about 1824 in Horry County, SC.
Josiah's father was Joseph Harrelson. Joseph was born in the Washington District of South Carolina about 1730. He married Su Song (Su-San- (Ni), a full-blooded American Indian of the Cheraw tribe. Su Song died about 1820. Joseph died before 1800; he was 70.
Joseph's father was Paul Harrelson Jr. who was born about 1682 in Virginia. He married Patience Lewis when he was 28, about 1710.
Paul Jr. died in South Carolina in 1754; he was 72.
Paul Harrelson Jr.'s father was Paul Harrelson Sr. who was born in 1650 in Denmark. He came to America and settled in New Kent County, VA. He was later naturalized in 1700. Paul Sr. married Rebecca Burgess. Paul Sr. died in Hanover County, VA. In 1734 when he was 84 years of age.
Background of Moses Harrelson
Moses Harrelson was a wealthy plantation owner in the "Pleasant Meadow" area in what is now Loris, Horry County, SC. Moses land is shown on the neighborhood plat map from the early 1800's. Much of these lands were grants from King George II and King George III. These grants have been handed down through families for generations and some still remain in descendant's hands today.
These pioneers came from several different countries. Moses Harrelson's family came from Denmark by way of Holland to New Kent County, VA. Moses great great grandfather, Paul Harrelson Sr. brought emigrants from Denmark and Holland to the Colonies in New Kent County, VA. He decided to stay and became naturalized in the early 1700's. Paul Harrelson Sr. was a crusty old sea captain and noted as a cleaver sort of short man with a twinkle in his hazel eyes and who liked a bit of a joke now and then.
Moses was the son of Josiah L. Harrelson and Mary Vick. His grandfather was Joseph Harrelson who married Su Song (Su-San- (Ni). From family oral tradition, Moses grandmother was a beautiful Indian Princess of the Cheraw Indian Tribe.
End Notes
My father was Homer Hamilton Harrelson Sr., the son of Doc D. Harrelson and Ava Jane Graham. We lived in Loris, S.C. as neighbors and very good friends of the Heniford families.
As a child I remember hearing there was a connection between my Harrelson family and the Heniford family. In all my research and oral tradition, I am convinced that the first Heniford (John) was the son of Moses Harrelson and Civil Boyd Suggs Cannon.
