"Associate Reformed Presbyterian Death & Marriage Notices" Volume III 1889-1896 compiled by Lowry Ware

Bro. Galloway [local editor of the Presbyterian]. I [Rev. J.P. Knox] sent you a little item for the news column. Old Uncle Toney Flenniken died in our town, Jan. 8, 1896 in the 85th year of his age. He was a slave of one of the Pressly's, and was born on Long Cane Creek. Moved to Chester with Mrs. Flenniken (now Jane Torbit), and when freed he came to York county where he lived until his death. He made a profession of faith at Hopewell A.R.P. church and was baptized by Dr. James Boyce. He was a member of Smyrna, for a number of years, and he and his wife, Aunt Sena, were the only colored members who left the congregation in the proper way. Dr. Ross told me that the Session gave them their letters. He was a kind, obliging man-faithful, honest and a truly pious man. Mrs. Torbit, his old mistress, writes, "Toney is the best of the Pressly slaves."
