Samuel Patterson Pressly, son of David and Jane [née Patterson] Pressly, was born September 12th 1792 near Cedar Springs A.R.P. church in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Samuel family were charter members of Cedar Springs and Long Cane A.R.P. churches.
Samuel attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky along with his brother, John Taylor Pressly; who became a very respected minister. Samuel studied medicine and became a physician.
On September 11th 1811, Samuel married his first cousin, Elizabeth Knox Hearst, daughter of Joseph and Jane [née Pressly] Hearst; with whom he had the following known children:

Jane Hearst Pressly (1813 – 1903)
Rev. David Pressly D.D. (1820 – 1891)
Joseph Hearst Pressly M.D. (1822 – 1872)
Cornelius Pressly (1824 – 1847)
Sarah Pressly (1827 – 1886)
In the late 1820's, Dr. Samuel Pressly was an outspoken opponent of the Nullification theories of John C. Calhoun; thus becoming very unpopular with the extremist Nullifiers of Abbeville County. So, for this reason he moved his growing family to Wilcox County, Alabama. There they joined a group of Associate Reformed Presbyterians; other families from the Abbeville area and established a community around Hamburg & Oakhill, Alabama.
Dr. Samuel Patterson Pressly departed this life on the 25th of October 1837. He was laid to rest in Hamburg Cemetery.
