Rev. Warren Flenniken (b. January 08, 1805, d. date unknown)
Warren Flenniken (son of John Flenniken and Mary Reid) was born January 08, 1805, and died date unknown in 31 Jul 1851. He married Jane Pressly, daughter of Samuel Pressly and Elizabeth Hearst.
Notes for Warren Flenniken:
Flenniken Clan History-dedicated to cousin Mary Curl Ingram-Compiled by Samuel Patterson Flenniken, Uniontown, PA, 1952
Warren Flenniken, youngest child of John 2nd, b-Jan. 5, 1805. He received primary education under Lawson Caldwell, who taught school on McAlpin's creek, near Providence church. From here he went to an academy presided over by Rev. Eleazer Harris,
n York County, S.C. From the academy he went to Jefferson College, Washington County, PA, where he entered the Junior class in 1827. He graduated in 1829, and this same year put himself under the control of the First Presbytery of the Associate RE
ORMED Presbyterian Church of the South, and began the study of theology. He pursued his studies under the direction of Rev. Issac Grier, D.D., James Lowry, and Samuel Pressly. His diary, which is still (1949) extant, shows; "On Tuesday, Nov. 13, 1
27, set out from my fathers' for Pennsylvania. Traveled to Charolette "ets". On Saturday, Dec. 1, arrived at Cannonsburg, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and on the following Monday entered college. The closing words of his diary on this subject
are; "The studies are Chemistry and Algebra. The whole distance from Mecklenburg to Cannonsburg, in Washington County, Penna. is 550 miles, according to my way bill-perhaps the distance is greater." He had traveled an average of 30 miles a day.
FOUNDER OF ERSKINE COLLEGE
In 1839, Rev. Warren Flenniken, with twelve fellow ministers of the Associate Reformed church founded Clark and Erskine College, now Erskine College, Due West, S.C. His associates in this great work were Isaac Grier, James Renwick, Thomas Ketchin,
benezer Harris, Joseph Lowry, James Lowry, Ebenezer Pressly, James Pressly, Robert Galloway, Henry Bryson, John Witherspoon and James Boyce.
The following is taken from the History of Hopewell Church, by Rev. Robert Lathan; writing of Rev. Warren Flenniken, he says; "In Nov. 1831 he was licensed to preach. For the period of about one year, he preached in vacancies of the Associate Refor
ed Synod, and made a missionary tour to Florida. In Nov. 1832, he was ordained and installed pastor of Hopewell and Union congregations in Chester County, S.C. In 1837 he demitted the Union branch of his charge, and continued to labor in Hopewell
until on account of bad health, he resigned his pastoral charge in 1848.
Warren Flenniken was a remarkable man. There was something about him that made an impression upon every individual with whom he came in contact. His convesational powers were simply prodigious. Nature designed Rev. Flenniken for a public man.It w
s impossible for him to the recluse. He took an interest in everything that was transpiring in the community in which he dwelt, and in the country generally. His mind was active rather than strong; quick rather than profound.
As a theologian Rev. Flenniken was a strict Calvanist, but his sermons were rarely doctrinal. He was always entertaining, and had great power of description and vision. His delivery was calm but he had a great earnestness of manner.
On July 31, 1851 he died. He is buried in the graveyard of the Hopewell Church, where lie the mortal remains of four of the five pastors of this historic congregation had since its organization many years ago."
