Notes about Jacobus Petrus Josephus Maria Asselbergs

Jacobus (Jacques) Petrus Josephus Maria Asselbergs was directeur van Asselbergs' Groothandel in oude en nieuwe metalen en aanverwante artikelen. Om in de Lindebaan te Bergen op Zoom ruimte te maken voor de uitbreiding van Asselbergs' IJzergieterij wordt in 1907 Asselbergs' Groothandel verplaatst naar de Wassenaarstraat te Bergen op Zoom. Onder leiding van Jacques wordt daar een op dit gebied modelbedrijf gevestigd, dat in die tijd voor Nederland zelfs uniek mocht worden genoemd. Met het overlijden van Jacques in 1930 en een felle wereldcrisis kon de groothandel geen stand houden. Dit bedrijf is dan ook in de jaren dertig geliquideerd. Jacques was commissaris van de moedermaatschappij Asselbergs' IJzerindustrie en Handelsmaatschappij N.V. en van de N.V. Asselbergs' IJzerhandel allen te Bergen op Zoom. Lid van het R.K. Armbestuur. Het gezin Asselbergs-Meuwese heeft eerst in de Stationsstraat wijk L op nummer 7 gewoond (nu nummer 17). In 1925/1926 is het gezin Asselbergs-Melchers verhuisd naar 'De Valk' op de Grote Markt 26. Op 6 oktober 1941 verhuist de weduwe Asselbergs-Melchers naar de Zuidzijde Zoom nummer 44. Deze villa zal later dienst gaan doen als burgemeesterswoning.
