Notes about Johannes Petrus Asselbergs

Johannes Petrus Asselbergs had samen met zijn jongere broer Antonius Elisabeth de leiding over de firma "Arnoldus Asselbergs' IJzerwaren, Gereedschappen en Huishoudelijke artikelen". Deze zaak was gevestigd in "Huize London" in de Lievevrouwestraat wijk B op nummer 20 in Bergen op Zoom. Hij woont daar samen met zijn zuster Cornelia Petronella. Johannes Petrus had als bijnaam "Jan Hoed" en gold als hoofd van de familie Asselbergs in Bergen op Zoom. Als zodanig mocht hij dan ook na het overlijden van zijn ouders in het ouderlijke huis Stationsstraat wijk L nummer 32 (nu nummer 28) gaan wonen. Bij een aanstaand huwelijk in de familie was het gebruikelijk, dat er eerst kennis werd gemaakt met "Jan Hoed". Voor dat doel werd er dan een rijtuig afgehuurd om eerst en vooral bij hem goedkeuring te vragen. Johannes Petrus is zelf ongehuwd gebleven. Hij woonde samen met zijn eveneens ongehuwde zuster Cornelia Petronella Asselbergs in de Stationsstraat in Bergen op Zoom. Hij is vanaf 1890 tot zijn overlijden in 1915 lid van Provinciale Staten van Noord Brabant. Hij volgt het overleden lid Carolus Ludovicus de Meulemeester op (1843-1889, zie parenteel familie de Meulemeester op deze site). Johannes Petrus wordt vervolgens in 1915 opgevolgd door E.E.M.C. Laane. Johannes Petrus Asselbergs was lid van de Hoofd Raad en President van de Bijzondere Raad van de Vincentiusvereniging. Medeoprichter en penningmeester van de in 1876 opgerichte St. Joseph Gezellenvereniging. Diocesaan penningmeester van de St. Radbout stichting. Vice-voorzitter van de Diocesane Hanze. Johannes Petrus is Ridder in de Orde van de H. Gregorius de Grote en Ridder in de Orde van Oranje Nassau.
