Hoewel hij zeer begaafd was moest hij op zijn 17 jaar zijn studies afbreken en gaan werken, omdat zijn moeder alleen achterbleef met zeven kinderen. Hij volgde avondschool scheikunde op de Paardemarkt in Antwerpen. Later werkte hij bij de firma Gevaert te Mortsel. Na de oorlog werkte hij bij Janssens Pharmaceutica.
Bij het uitbreken van de tweede wereldoorlog nam hij, als zoveel overtuigde Vlamingen, dienst bij 'Flandria SS. Hij overleefde de slag om Stalingrad en de terugtocht.
Na de oorlog werd hij te Hemiksem geïnterneerd. Zijn interneringsnummer was BB4759R184. Hoe lang zijn verblijf daar geduurd heeft moet verder nog uitgezocht worden.
Nonkel Frans was zeer muzikaal. Hij speelde fluit en picolo bij de Koninklijke Harmonie Ste-Cecilia en fluit bij Euterpa te Mortsel. Zeer groot van gestalte: 1.94 m.
