Piet werd geboren als helft van een tweeling, maar zijn tweelingbroer Arie Pieter overleed na zes weken. Piet werkte in een slagerij, bracht vlees rond en ontmoette zo Elisabeth. Ging op haar aandringen werken bij de Gistfabriek. Toen
tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog de vleesprijzen stegen, besloot de directie van de Gistfabriek een fabrieksruimte in te richten als slagerij t.b.v. het personeel. Van 1914 tot 1918 werden hiervoor twaalf arbeiders vrijgemaakt. Piet had de
leiding. Hij kocht ook het slachtvee op de Delftse veemarkt. Volgens de bevolkingsregisters was hij Hervormd, maar volgens de familieoverlevering Gereformeerd; hij brak met de kerk na een conflict met de wijkpredikant.
