Arend was eerst boekhouder, later magazijnmeester bij firma De Lint tot die failliet ging. Begon toen bij Buijs B.V. als vertegenwoordiger in bouwmaterialen. Arend en Gerretje woonden in bij Pieter A. (1875). Gerretje raakte verlamd door
multiple sclerose. Ze zijn in goede verstandhouding gescheiden, waarna Gerretje naar een verzorgingstehuis in Vlaardingen ging.
