Bert nam de schuit van vader over. Voer als beurtschipper met broer Arie van Delft naar Amsterdam v.v. Op een vrijdagavond waren ze te lang in een Haags café blijven hangen, waarna ze na sluitingstijd bij de Delftse Lepelbrug aankwamen. De
brugwachter, tevens portier van de Gistfabriek, weigerde de brug te openen. De beschonken broers namen het niet en ramden de brug. Bert werd veroordeeld, kon kiezen tussen de gevangenis of koloniaal worden. Bert koos voor het laatste en
ging naar Indië. De schuit werd verkocht om de schade te betalen. Toen Bert terugkwam werd hij eerst knecht op zijn oude schip, tot de rederij failliet ging. Werd toen 's zomers ijs- en 's winters mosselverkoper.
