Al op jonge leeftijd toonde ze grote belangstelling voor muziek en met name zang had haar voorkeur. Ze had privé zangles van Bouwmans, de leider van het zangkoor "Orelia". Deze probeerde haar te koppelen aan “rooie Miel”, een zoon van de rijke katholieke boer Eisenbaart. Dit is echter uitgelekt. Gemma kreeg van haar vader huisarrest. Toen zij seringen uit de ramen strooide liet hij haar ramen dichttimmeren. Bouwmans raakte bijna al zijn leerlingen kwijt en werd op die manier het dorp uitgewerkt. Ze heeft nog enige tijd pianoles gehad in België6.

Ze zou in die periode ook in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis hebben gezeten7. Gemma is altijd ongetrouwd gebleven en uiteindelijk werd ze verpleegster.
