Hij was directeur van een suikerfabriek in Halfweg, vervolgens directeur van een suikeronderneming in Djambong en weer later in Saigon.


Hij heeft gewoond in: Axel, Doetinchem, Halfweg, Java, Indo-China en Parijs. Halverwege de jaren ’50 is bij hem een melanoom aan zijn oor ontdekt. Een experimentele behandeling die in die tijd net toegepast werd, was het plaatsen van een staafje met Radium op de te behandelen plek. Deze behandeling is uiteindelijk uit de gratie geraakt, omdat veel patiënten (zoals hij) leukemie ontwikkelden.
