Hij ging naar het Gereformeerd Gymnasium in Amsterdam en was in huis bij zijn oom en tante Crap Hellingman. In die tijd zei men dat hij voor "Galg en Rad" op zou groeien. Wegens banden met de Katholieke Kerk is hij ook nog twee weken van school gestuurd. Na twee jaar hield hij de school voor gezien en besloot onderwijzer te worden. Op 6 mei 1910 haalde hij zijn onderwijzersakte in Middelburg. Vlak daarop werd hij onderwijzer in Axel. Vanaf 1 januari 1914 tot 30 september 1917 was hij onderwijzer aan de Hervormde school in de Waterstraat die in de beruchte wijk C in Utrecht lag. In Utrecht begon hij zich actief bezig te houden met het sociale werk. Vooral aan de bestrijding van de drankellende had hij zijn handen vol. Na enkele jaren stelde hij zichzelf voor de keuze: of school of het staatsexamen halen gevolgd door een studie áof verder gaan in het sociale werk. Hij koos tenslotte voor de studie, maar bleef zich toch actief inzetten voor het sociale werk. Om zich in zijn levensbehoeften te voorzien had hij daarnaast nog allerlei baantjes; zo was hij vertegenwoordiger voor de geneesmiddelenfabrikant "Glypho". Op 17 augustus 1923 slaagde hij tenslotte voor zijn staatsexamen A. Hierop volgde hij de theologische studie aan de Rijksuniversiteit in Utrecht. Zijn proponentsexamen haalde hij op 8 november 1928. Op 19 mei 1929 werd hij als N.H. predikant bevestigd in de gemeenten Ransdorp en Schellingwoude. In Ransdorp heeft hij een keer de brandklok geluid, toen hij vond dat de kerk erg leeg bleef op Zondag. Toen de bewoners gehaast en nieuwsgierig aan kwamen lopen vertelde hijdat zijn preek over vuur ging. Ook de politie was snel ter plaatse.

Op 10 januari 1932 werd hij predikant in de gemeente Klaaswaal, vervolgens was hij vanaf 21 april 1946 predikant in Woubrugge en in Nijkerkerveen vanaf 24 april 1949. Op 1 mei 1955 ging hij met emeritaat. Blijkbaar kon hij niet zonder zijn werk, want vanaf 1955 was hij hulppredikant in Zeist, vanaf 1957 in Driebergen en in Utrecht vanaf 1960 tot 13 september 1966.
