Hendrik is als dienstplichtig marinier in februari 1947 op de M.S. Kota Inten ingezet tijdens de koloniale oorlog in Nederlands-Indië (teruggekeerd in april 1949). Na hun huwelijk woonden Hendrik en Zwaantje in Annen. Ze kregen twee kinderen: Aaltje (Aly) (1954) en Albertje (Bertha) Nijborg (1955).
