Op 22 juni 1901 nam hij ontslag en ging met zijn gezin wonen in Rotterdam Nieuwe Binnenweg 622. Gebrek aan leiderschap aan zijn kant en heimwee aan haar kant maakten dat ze op 30 maart 1906 verhuisden naar de Schurinksdwarsweg 25 te Enschede. Vervolgens op 1 januari 1907 naar de Lipperkerkstraat 267a te Enschede (Op de dag dat hun dochter Truus stierf??)
16 juli 1909 verhuisden ze van Enschede naar Hengelo (Berfloweg 34 later naar 76). Op 2 januari 1923 verhuizing nar de Steenbakkersweg 18 en op 18 september 1934 naar de Haaksbergerstraat 55 (later hernoemd tot Industriestraat 59).

Notes about Gerardus Johannes Maria "Gerrit" van de LAAK

Als 15 jarige jongen ging hij in 1887 als leerling kopergieter-vormer werken bij Dikkers & Co te Hengelo. Als 20 jarige moest hij de dienstplicht vervullen bij het 2e Bataljon Regiment Grenadiers en Jagers (stamboeknr: 55075). Op 22 Juni 1901 nam hij ontslag en ging met zijn gezin wonen in Rotterdam en werken bij kopergieterij Windemuller te IJsselmonde. Vanwege zijn vakmanschap was hij gevraagd daar als baas te komen werken. Zijn aanwezigheid in Rotterdam was maar van korte duur. Hij en zijn vrouw konden niet aarden. Volgens de verhalen kon hij moeilijk als baas werken. Hij voelde zich meer tussen het gewone volk. Na zijn verhuizing naar Hengelo ging hij werken bij Gruijters & Zweerik als vormer/kopergieter.
In de loop van zijn leven is hij vaak verhuisd. Van Ootmarsum naar Enschede naar Rotterdam Op oudere leeftijd woonde hij een korte tijd bij zijn dochter Betsie aan de Eikstraat. Bij het overlijden van zijn vrouw Trui keerde hij terug naar zijn dochter Marie, die woonde aan de Industriestraat 185-1, daar bracht hij de laatste twee jaar door.Zijn hele leven was tuinieren zijn grootste hobby. Aan de Industriestraat had hij een volière met kanaries en daar kweekte hij ook mee.
Na een kortstondige ziekte overleed hij op 12 oktober 1959. Hij mocht bijna 87 jaar oud worden.
