Donalds familie verhuisde vaak toen hij opgroeide, waaronder Central Avenue in Holland, MI;Rochester, NY;de boerderij in Hamilton, MI;24th Street in Holland in een huis gekocht en verkocht voor $ 800; en daarna terug naar Hamilton.Hij stond bekend als een ondeugend kind, dicht bij zijn vader en net als zijn moeder.Irene werd geboren op de boerderij van het gezin en deed huishoudelijk werk voor anderen voordat ze in 1940 met Donald trouwde en verhuisde naar het hoekhuisin Overisel, MI. Donald werd opgeroepen voor het leger, trainde in Maryland en gaf les in Texas over het repareren van luchtafweergeschut.Zijn 300 Ordinance vertrok naar Schotland, maar onderweg kreeg hij een ernstige longontsteking waardoor hij in het ziekenhuis belandde.Na zijn herstel sloot hij zich aan bij de 610 Ordinance en reed later troepen van Frankrijk naar het Duitse front, en werkte ook aan het repareren van geweren in een Duitse fabriek tegen het einde van de oorlog. Terwijl Donald in het leger zat, werkte Irene een jaar in een supermarkt.Donald keerde in augustus 1945 terug naar huis, toen hij zijn 11 maanden oude dochter Donna voor het eerst zag.Ze bouwden een nieuw huis op de heuvel in de buurt in Overisel, en Donald begon te werken voor Fisher Body bij General Motors in Grand Rapids, MI.Ze verhuisden in 1952 naar een straat verderop, en begin jaren 60 begonnen ze te werken als conciërges voor de Overisel Church aan de overkant, een baan die ze meer dan 22 jaar volhielden.Donald ging in 1972 met pensioen. Donald was een intelligente, creatieve man, emotioneel en met een gevoel voor humor dat leidde tot veel dwaze verhalen en gezegden, zoals zijn eigen creatieve versie van "The Night Before Christmas."Irene was een aardig, warm persoon eneen goede kok, behoorlijk emotioneel en altijd zorgzaam voor familie en vrienden.Donald en Irene zijn begraven op de begraafplaats van Overisel.
