Notes about Dirk (Dick) Kaper

Dirk was een soldaat in Nederland die trouwde met Dieuwke (mogelijk al zwanger - "Met Legitimatie van een soort") en had daar vijf kinderen. Ergens na augustus 1897 verhuisde het gezin van St. Jacobiparochie naar St. Annaparochie. Zijn broer Jans Alles (John) was de eerste Kaper die emigreerde naar Michigan, waar hij zich in 1896 vestigde ten zuiden van Zeeland. Er zijn verschillende verhalen waarin wordt uitgelegd waarom Dirk en Diebee Nederland verlieten. In één mogelijk scenario werd Dirk gedwongen te vertrekken vanwege betrokkenheid bij hekserij. In een ander scenario probeerde Dirk naar verluidt zich in hun maïswieg te hangen; Zijn zoon Albert vond hem die naar Dieuwke rende, die hem afsloot. Ze verlieten toen het land uit schaamte. Dirk stak alleen de oceaan over in 1899 of 1902 om voor Jans Alles te werken en voldoende geld in te zamelen om zijn gezin over te brengen. In 1903 kwam Dieuwke naar Amerika met moeder Hendrikje, zwager John Smit (getrouwd met Jessie) en de vijf kinderen. In de VS verhuisde het gezin vaak, ongeveer een keer per jaar, naar plaatsen als Rochester, NY; Hamilton, MI; Holland, MI, op 13th Street en 26th Street; North Blendon, MI; en Beaverdam, mi. In de eerste plaats deelt hij de landbouw van selderij en uien met goede vriend John Smit. Dieuwke stond bekend als een rustig persoon, zwaar en geliefd vanwege haar vriendelijkheid. Ze stierf aan een hartaanval. Nadat hun vrouwen stierven, woonden Dirk en John Smit samen op een boerderij in Hamilton, MI, waar ze nogal onaardig waren voor hun zonen en het geld namen waarvoor ze werkten. Dirk was een zoekt persoon en niet erg sympathiek, met een snel humeur en ruwe taal, maar altijd interessant voor de mensen om hem heen. Dirk trouwde later met Dena Ross, die hij drie jaar later verliet nadat ze al zijn geld uit hun huis had gestolen in Constantine, MI. Hij lifte terug naar Hamilton en stierf daar binnen een jaar. DIEUWKE is begraven op Pilgrim Home Cemetery
