Jacobus was eerder getrouwd, op 18 februari 1753 te Bergen op Zoom, met Anthonet van Riel. In de huwelijksaantekening staat dat hij geboren en wonende is "onder de Poorterij", zijnde ruwweg het grondgebied van de stad Bergen op Zoom. Ook Anthonet woont daar bij haar huwelijk, maar zij is afkomstig uit het nu Belgische Essen, juist ten oosten van Bergen op Zoom. Anthonet en Jacobus wonen in Heerle en dopen vier kinderen: oudste zoon Martinus in 1753, en een tweeling Joannes en Maria in 1755. Joanes overlijdt waarschijnlijk snel, want in 1756 dopen ze nogmaals een zoon met die naam. Bij hun huwelijksakte staat geschreven: "beiden Rooms, en alles wel."

Jacobus wordt geboren in het buurtschap Vissenheuvel, ten zuiden van Essen.
