Child(ren):
Charles was very fun loving and always had his joke even if it was on him. When he was going to school at the Rising Sun School, he was the only one who had a knife and so it was his job to cut the switches for the teacher. If he knew that the switch was going to be used on someone else, he cut a good strong beach switch or withe (as it was called in those days) and it would reallly last. the teacher could give a good switching to the offender. If he knew it was to be used on him, however (and he got his share of witchings, since he was quite mischievious), he would cut a hazel nut switch and, surreptitiously, notch it several times. After a few strokes by the teacher, it would fly to pieces and his whipping would be over. He was always full of tricks and jokes but no one ever angry with him. He grew up to be one of the best-liked men in the community. Everyone was always anxious to visit him. he became the leader in family get-togethers in later life.
