    Notes about Herbert Theodore DeYoung

Herbert was born in Prairie View, Norton Co, KS, the son of Peter and Della VanderBeek DeJong. Herbert had 4 step-brothers and one step-sister. Also, 4 brothers and 5 sisters when his father married for the second time. All the boys had to work on the farm. When he was old enough he served as "water monkey" for his Uncle Al who had a steam engine. He had to fill the tank which was on a wagon chassis with a hand operated pump at the farm stock tank, then drive it to the steam engine. While still living on the family farm, Herbert was kicked in the face by a horse. He lost an eye and used an artificial one from then on. The kick also pushed in the bridge of his nose. That was built up, but it didn't last.

On Sept 1, 1926 he married Letitia Roberts in Prairie View. They lived in Prairie View where he operated a hardware store with his brother-in-law, Bert Van De Wege. They later moved to a farm near Prairie View and later bought one near Almena in Norton County KS.

Letitia and Herbert had six children - Blanche, Arnold, Joyce, Ardith, Dorcas and Ivan. They were raised on the farm near Almena. Herbert and Letitia were devout Christians and raised their children to love the Lord. All of them followed in their parents' footsteps. They were active in the Church of God in Norton KS. Herbert with brother, David, and two other men formed a men's quartet and sang at church.

He died while living in Almena. He was a beloved husband, father and brother.
