Na de HBS studeerde hij geneeskunde te Goningen.
Specialisatie tot internist en longarts bij van Buchem en Orie te Groningen.
6 April 1949 promoveerde hij met de dissertatie "Oesophagusdruk en Longelasticiteit", promotor was prof.M.N.J. Dirken.
1951-1954: Chef de clinique binnen de afd. interne geneeskunde Sint Joseph ZH te Heerlen met als specialisatie hart- en longonderzoek.
1954-1983 Hoofd van de nieuw opgerichte afdeling Longziekten. Hij kreeg vrijwel meteen de opleidingsbevoegdheid van het specialisme longziekten. 16-12-1983: Afscheid ZH.
Hij was een sportieve man. Met zijn ouders, broers en zus maakte hij in de jaren dertig lange trektochten in Frankrijk (Haute Savoye), Corsica, De Atlas in Algerije en de Sapaanse en Franse Pyreneeën. In 1941 reed hij de elfstedentocht uit, hoewel die officieel was afgelast vanwege de barre vorst. In zijn HBS- en studententijd was hij een fanatiek hockeyer, de "snelste rechtsbuiten van het Noorden". Hij las veel, maar genoot vooral van de alledaagse gezelligheid van het gezin en van het samenzijn met vrienden en familie.
