Studeerde geneeskunde in Groningen.
10 Augustus 1945: Promotie Cum Laude op 'Een Experimenteel onderzoek over de circulatie in den vinger' in Groningen, zijn vader was zijn promotor. Hij genoot zijn chirurgische opleiding bij prof.dr. P.R.Michaël in het Gemeenteziekenhuis Zuidwal in Den Haag. De vermaarde dr.E.J.H.Hustinx, chirurg in het St. Joseph Ziekenhuis vanaf het begin (1904), overleed plotseling op 14 november 1946 op 71-jarige leeftijd. Zijn tweede man P. Roodenburg (1910-2003) was de verwachte opvolger. Het college van regenten benoemde echter de katholiek Buytendijk in plaats van de protestant Roodenburg.
1946-1977 Chirurg opleider in Heerlen in het Sint Joseph Ziekenhuis, vanaf 1968 De Wever ZH genoemd, nog later Atrium MC. Hij hield van vissen, schaatsen, zeilen, lezen en schilderen. Hij was getrouwd (tweede huwelijk) met Meta Slomianka.
