In 1890 brak in Alkmaar brand uit. Voor het stamboomonderzoek in Noord-Holland heeft dat vervelende gevolgen. Bij deze brand werden naast grote delen van de archieven van Alkmaar en Hoorn namelijk alle registers van geboorte, huwelijk en overlijden uit het voormalige arrondissement Hoorn vernietigd, inclusief de huwelijksbijlagen. Omdat van de registers altijd twee exemplaren bestaan, konden afschriften gemaakt worden van de gemeentelijke exemplaren. Van vele Noord-Hollandse gemeenten zijn de in enkelvoud ingeleverde bijlagen echter voorgoed verloren gegaan.
