Notes about Sytze Jans Hemrica

Bron: het stamboek voor onderofficieren en manschappen die naar Oost-Indië vertrokken. In dit geval op 7-4-1888 met het stoomschip "Zeeland" uit Rotterdam. Aankomst op 19-5-1888 in Batavia. Dit stamboek is te vinden in het Nationaal Archief in Den Haag.
Op 12-5-1884 deed Sytze zijn intrede in het leger als loteling van de lichting 1884 uit Leeuwarden. Op 15-9-1885 kreeg hij groot verlof en daarvan was hij terug op 17-6-1887. Op 16-7-1887 was er weer groot verlof.
Op 25-2-1888 wordt hij aangenomen als soldaat van het korps Torpedisten en tekende hij een verbintenis voor 6 jaar voor de koloniale troepen. Kennelijk is die verbintenis later verlengd, maar dat stond niet in de aantekeningen. Zijn stamboeknummer was 32717 (= suppletienummer), waaronder hij in het stamboek te vinden is.) en zijn algemene Indiënummer was 26725. Zijn persoonlijke nummer was 1726. De verbintenis ging in op het moment van inscheping. Hij kreeg f.300,-
Zijn signalement: breed voorhoofd, ronde kin, gewone neus, blond haar, grijze ogen en een tatouage op de linkerhand. Hij was 1.77. Hij had geringe aderspatten in de linker kniekuil. (spataderen dus).
Op 13-4-1899 sneuvelt hij als fuselier te Padang Tidjé (Ik heb een plaatsje gevonden met de naam Padangtiji) door een bajonetsteek en blijft er voor zijn ouders f. 53,91 over en die wordt uitgekeerd op 10-8-1900. Er staat dat zijn ouders al eerder naar zijn gezondheid/ lot hadden geïnformeerd.
Er wordt nog verwezen naar een Atjeh-dossier van 7-6-1899. In 1898 was de bekende J.B. van Heutz gouverneur van Atjeh geworden!
Via het maritiem museum in Rotterdam vond ik stoomschip Zeeland. Dit werd in 1877 gebouwd in Engeland: op de werf van Raylton Dixon and Co te Middlesborough. Het schip heette toen "Wyberton" In 1881 kwam het naar Nederland en voer 10 jaar voor de N.V. Stoomvaart Maatschappij Rotterdam van Wim Ruys en Zonen en John Sheriff Hill. Daarna is het schip teruggegaan naar Engeland, weer onder de naam Wyberton. Het schip had toen verschillende eigenaren. Op 17 februari 1901 verging het ten westen van Zanthe. (Volgens mij is dat Zakinthos, een Grieks eiland.)
