Volgens zijn persoonskaart was hij nooit getrouwd. Er staan heel veel adressen, oa Haniasteeg 7 (Leeuwarden), waar ook zijn broer Jan woonde. In 1946 woont hij op een woonschip, net als zijn broer Jan. Er staan ook adressen buiten Friesland: in Apeldoorn en in Hengelo. Hij woont 2 keer in Hengelo in de Regelinklaan 3, waarschijnlijk bij familie.

Leeuwarder Courant: op 9-12-1937 staat er een verslag van een rechtszaak in. Een los arbeider te Leeuwarden werd door de politierechter in Leeuwarden veroordeeld tot 14 dagen gevangenisstraf. Getuige is IJ.Hemrika. Dit zou IJsbrand kunnen zijn. Die meldde dat de verdachte hem aanviel en dat hij dat ook al een week eerder had gedaan met een blikschaar. Het ging om dezelfde dame. De verdachte beweerde dat IJsbrand hem en zijn vrouw steeds uitschold. Verder zei hij dat zijn broer had geslagen.

Op 5-10-1937 is het vervolg: de rechter vraagt nog of er geen onenigheid was over een zekere publieke vrouw. IJsbrand ontkent dit. Ook een andere getuige, de heer A.Boschma, die ook aan de Bollensteeg woont, waar de mishandeling op 25 juli plaats vond, bevestigt dat beide broers Hemrika mishandeld hebben. De beide broers hadden de hele nacht plezier gemaakt en Hemrika mishandeld, toen die "in den ochtend buitenkwam." IJsbrand woonde in 1937 in de Bollensteeg. De verdachte blijkt al zes keer veroordeeld te zijn en krijgt dus 2 weken gevangenisstraf.
