Dirk left Harlingen on the 4th June 1894 bound for Hull in England. Dirk settled in the Hull area and married Beatrice Houghton (born 3/9/1876); Beatrice was from Garthorpe in Lincolnshire, they married in March 1898. In 1901 Dirk and Beatrice lived at 150 Chiltern Street in Hull, at this time Dirk’s occupation was described as an Insurance Agent. Dirk and Beatrice had three children, Jacobus Dirk Alta (born 14/2/1899 in Hull), Thomas Houghton Alta (born June 1900 in Hull) and Edward Alta (born 8/9/1903 in Rotterdam). Dirk’s parents Jacobus Dirk and Geeske Alta moved to Hull in October 1894). Dirk eventually moved back to Harlingen and lived there until he died in 1952. Beatrice stayed in the Hull area until her death in 1968.
