Notes about Alfred George Farquhar Bernard

St Andrew's Cathedral Register, Singapore. Birth Aug, 25 1824, baptised Oct 27, 1824. B Fitzgerald-Moore notes.

From Una Sati's manuscript: "A Spiritual Odyssey - Life and Letters of Henry Me
yners Bernard":

"Henry Bernard's father was born to Farquhar's eldest daughter in 1824, a year after his grandfather Farquhar had left Singapore. He became a prosperous stock-broker and owner o
f a coffee plantation. In his youth he was noted for his brilliance and wit, and for being an expert chess player. A pen-and-ink self portrait, while it gives him a slightly satanic appearance, testif
ies to his artistic ability.

"Henry had no memories of his father, who never came to England (Henry having been sent home to school at the age of three). As the years went by his father became
an increasingly embittered athiest. In his last yers he drank to excess, suffered three strokes, and died at the age of 55 from cancer of the jaw-bone.

"At the age of twenty-six (? surely twenty
-four?) he was considered a good match and found no difficulty in obtaining the consent to his marriage with Elizabeth Antoinette Moor, a handsome and lively girl of sixteen."

Marriage witnesses
: W.R. George (uncle by marriage, husband of Aunt Caroline Elizabeth George), A.J. Spotteswoode, A.C. Leffler, H. Ryan, A. Farquhar, Thomas Campbell, J.D. Clark, N. Clark, Andrew Connolly, A.C. Bing,
J.C. Bing, A. Blundell, E.J. Dave, Wm. Williams. From St Andrew's Cathedral Register, Singapore. B. Fitzgerald-Moore notes.

Alfred and Antoinette lived at "Woodleigh". Una Sait again: "A faded phot
ograph of Woodleigh, taken many years later, depicts my father's [Henry] birth-place as a picturesque and spacious bungalow, surrounded by wide expanses of lawn against a background of palms and other
tropical vegetation."
