Sir James Elphinstone, 3rd Bt. was born circa 1710.1 He was the son of Sir John Elphinstone, 2nd Bt. and Mary Elliot.2 He married Jean Rattray, daughter of Rt. Rev. Thomas Rattray, 20th of Craighall-Rattray, on 4 October 1733.1 He died in April 1739, without male issue.1

Sir James Elphinstone, 3rd Bt. was admitted to Advocate on 23 January 1728.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Elphinstone, of Logie Elphinstone, co. Aberdeen and Nova Scotia [N.S., 1701] on 14 March 1732.1 He lived at Logie Elphinstone, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.3
