"Sleaper, Henry"

"In 1884 Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sleaper, along with their baby daughter, Alberdena, moved to the United States from Wenner [sic], Germany and settled in Iowa. In the following years they were to have 10 more children and thus begin many generations of hard-working citizens of Deuel County [SD]."

"The Sleapers moved their family to Deuel County in 1905 and settled on a farm northeast of Brandt. Thier last child was born there. They then moved to the Steve Tragerson farm located four miles west of Gary. As the family prosperedand saved, they eventually bought the farm near Lake Cochrane which later was owned by the Bostics."

"Years later they bough 80 acres northwest of Gary from Mary Frohlech. In 1940 they moved in with their son, Henry Jr., and his wife. After several years they moved in with their daughter, Dena, and there spent the last five years oftheir lives. In all they had 11 children; Alberdena, Peter, John, Henry, Alvert, Avert, Johann, Henrietta, Harmka, Anna, and Gertie."

"Ironically, here we have 13 citizens of Deuel County with the name Sleaper, which is obviously of European origin. But in actually, Mr. Sleaper's real name was Johnson, which is typical American. As Henry's trade was called a dirt scraper, and the custom of the time and old country was to have the last name denote one's trade, he changed his name from Johnson to Sleaper, which is German for scraper."

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sleaper, Sr.

In this 'modern age' of short-term marriages, it is indeed interesting to be able to record the observance of a couple here of their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sleaper, Sr., who are both 85 years of age, were united in marriage in Germany on June 14, 1883, and with the first child, (Mrs Claus Martens), came to America and first settled in Iowa, moving to this vicinity in the1906, and have been residents here since.

At present they are making their home with Mrs Martens, two miles north of Gary on the state 11e highway.

Eleven Children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Sleaper, and seven of these are living and reside in this community, namely, Mrs. Claus Martens, Mrs. Carl Fritz, Mrs. Tol Simonton, Mrs. Howard Winrow, Mrs. Carl Knutson, Henry Jr., and JohnSleaper.

Although the aged couple is in fairly good health, it is not planned to hold an open house. However all the children and relatives plan to gather at the Tol Simonton home this Sunday to honor the esteemed couple."
