"In September of 1924, Jasper and Bertha Smidt and small son, Peter, arrived in America from Germany. They came to Lakota since Jasper's cousins, the Steenhards lived here. In 1928 [sic] they were joined by Bertha's three brothers, Henry, Carl and Klass Meyer."

"The Smidts farmed southwest of Lakota until retirement. They had three children: Peter, William, and Jane. Jasper's favorite hobby was fishing, and Bertha's favorite hobby was her plants."

Lakota - Funeral services were held for Jasper Smidt, 77, of Lakota at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Ledyard with Rev. Victor Vriesen officiating. Burial was in Olena Mound cemetery at Buffalo Center with Winter Funeral Home in charge of services.

Mr. Smidt passed away Thursday night at the Blue Earth Community Hospital in Blue Earth.

He was born June 21, 1894 in Vunderhammerich, Germany and married his wife, Bertha, there on January 4, 1920. They came to the United States in 1924 and lived in the Ledyard and Lakota area since.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha; two sons, Peter of Lakota and William of Swea City; one daughter, Mrs. John (Jane) Berschman of Buffalo Center; 16 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild, also three sisters living in Germany."
