Robert Shannon, age 61, of Alta, Iowa died Sunday, April 10, 2011 at his home in Alta.

Robert James was born January 2, 1950 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Harold and Laura Mae (Matthews) Shannon. Growing up he attended school in Storm Lake and later enlisted in the United States Army. Robert was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War where he served his country until he was honorably discharged.

In 1995 Robert was united in marriage to Esther Zielger. Together they lived in Hanover.

Robert was an active member of the Quarter House Association and the Alta VFW Post #6172. He had a passion for horses and other livestock, and enjoyed trail riding and being a part of the Saddle Club. In Robert's free time he liked to go to area auctions and sales. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Robert (fiancé Samantha) Shannon of Urbandale, Iowa; Michael (Nora) Shannon of Nemaha, Iowa; Wendy (Dale) Kirby of Pleasantville, Iowa; Sheila Michelson of Swea City, Iowa; Rob Pigman of Swaledale, Iowa; and Allan Ziegler of Woden, Iowa; grandchildren: Mariah Ann, Laci Anne, Zakeriah, Daved, Roman, Anthony, James, Kyle, and McKenzie; brothers: Paul (Ina Rae) Shannon of Alta, Iowa; and David (Carolyn) Shannon of Storm Lake, Iowa; sister, Susan Shannon-Graves of Storm Lake, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther in 2000; and his parents.
