Laura Mae Matthews was born on July 11, 1920 in Storm Lake, Iowa, to John James and Jessie Pearl (Lemaster) Matthews. She attended schools in Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1937. Following her graduation, Laura Mae attended A.I.B. in Des Moines and nurses training at St. Anthony's in Carroll, graduating in 1943.

On September 13, 1945, Laura Mae was united in marriage to Harold A. Shannon at the Methodist Parsonage in Storm Lake. This union was blessed with four children: Paul, David, Robert and Susan.

Initially, Laura Mae worked as a registered nurse in California for a short time, then moved on to Porath Hospital in Storm Lake. She transitioned to private duty nursing in 1952 at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake, where she stayed until 1970, then served at Buena Vista Clinic until she retired in 1987.

Laura was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. She enjoyed reading, knitting and loving and caring for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to mourn her passing are her children: Paul Shannon and his wife Ina Rae of Alta, Iowa; David Shannon and his wife Carolyn of Storm Lake; Robert Shannon of Hanover, Iowa and Susan Shannon-Graves of Storm Lake; nine grandsons; four step-grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren on the way; one sister, Isabel Shaw and her husband Carl of Storm Lake; as well as other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold on July 18, 1999; two brothers; three sisters; and daughter-in-law, Esther Shannon.
