Funeral services for Cena Gruis Sapp will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at First United Methodist Church in Newton. Friends may greet family at the church from 9 a.m. to thetime of service.

Memorials may be designated to Progress Industries, First United Methodist Church or NAMI of Jasper County.
The daughter of Haiko H. and Annie (Stubbe) Gruis, she was born May 24, 1916, in George. She attended rural schools in Lyon County and George High School, graduating in 1933. Cena attended Iowa State Teachers College and received her teaching certificate. On March 17, 1940, Cena was united in marriage with Paul B. Sapp in George. They lived in the Colfax area 26 years before moving to Newton in 1966. Cena worked for the Newton Daily News and the Maytag Company. She retired from her secretary position at Maytag in 1982. Cena was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Jasper County Historical Society and NAMI of Jasper County.

Cena died on Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was 91 years old.

Cena was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Paul, in 1982; and one sister, Anna. Those left to honor Cena's memory include her daughter, Cynthia Sapp of Newton; her grandsons, Joel (Lynn) Matthiesen of Monrovia, Calif., and Matthew Sapp of Ames; her great-grandchildren, Emily, Megan and Robbie; a sister, Harriet White of Grayslake, Ill.; and her two nieces and a nephew.*
