"THE BERSCHMAN FAMILY

John Diedrick Berschman was born March 2, 1861 at Pewsum, Ostfriesland, Germany. When he was twenty he immigrated to Parkersburg and Grundy Center, Iowa. Many of our Buffalo Center people first came to look at the dark, rich loam wheretheir new llives were to begin in this new land.

In 1884 he married Cornelia Garrels, a servant for a Mason City lawyer, and moved to the community of Germania (Lakota) to the Jasper Smidt farm. They had four daughters: Mrs. H. J. Kline (Sandy Bashan's grandmother), Johanna (wo stayedsingle), Della Everding; Helen Eisenhauer (Ann Abels, Cora Abels, Harold, Jack, Velma and Dorothy Caltvedt's mother), and two sons. Heyo (Ruth Clapper, Kay Newel, twin sons, Joe and John - who is my father). The other son, Cornelius,was the father of Alice (Barkhurst), Evelyn (Esterich), Elaine (Albertson), and Katherine (Behrends). ..."

"AUGUST AND HELEN EISENHAUER

Theodore August Eisenhauer, son of John and Anna Eisenhauer, was born April 15, 1889 at Norden, Germany. He had five sisters and two brothers; all lived in Germany.

August sailed from Bremerhaven, Germany, on the old German ship «i»The Rhein«/i» for 15 days and docked at Baltimore, Maryland.

He came to Germania (now Lakota), Iowa and lived with an uncle, Albertus Furst, and started a barber trade. He was 23 years old when he left Germany. He operated the barber shop until 1920, when he moved with his family to a farm northeast of Buffalo Center and started farming. They moved by train.

He married Helen Berschman of Germania on December 8, 1914. Helen was the daughter of John and Cornelia (Garels) Berschman of Germania and was born February 2, 1893. She attended rural school near Lakota.

August and Helen were the parents of six children: Anna (Mrs. John Abels), Cora (Mrs. Joe Abels), Harold, John "Jack," Velma, Dorothy (Mrs. Clifford Caltvedt).

August and Helen retired in 1950 and moved into town in Buffalo Center. They were members of the Congregational Church. August made one return trip to Germany to see his family. August died February 2, 1960 and Helen died on April 6, 1975."
