As reported from this source, the shooting occurred at the Nienkirk farm on the outskirts of the MN town. Both Klingbile andMiss Heidebrink were employed at the farm, and the young girl had gone out with the man several times. Monday evening, while the two were on the Nienkirk lawn, Klingbile proposed marriage to Etta. The girl refused and Klingbile ran intothe house. Etta's sister and members of the Nienkirk family were in the yard, only a short distance away, at the time.

Klingbile rushed out of the house carrying a shotgun. When only a few yards from Etta he fired, the charge striking her in the abdomen and shoulder.
