Mildred Grace (Johnson) Onken, the daughter of Frederick and Minnie (Ackerman) Johnson, was born on November 20, 1921 in Reading, MN. She attended country school and worked on the family farm. She enjoyed a brief time as a young woman working in Chicago to support the war effort. She returned to marry Edward Onken on April 26, 1944.. They farmed together starting in Avoca, moving to Chandler on 1961 and returning to Iona in 1968. Millie worked various area jobs to help support the family during lean years on the farm. They retired to their home in Slayton in 1981. She remained there until the passing of Ed in 2003. In the fall of 2004 she made the decision to move to Maple View Estates in Fulda as she no longer wanted to live alone. She lived independently for many years until a fall forced her to enter the nursing unit.

Millie passed away on June 9, 2020 at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda at the age of 98, where she was wonderfully cared for.

Millie was a hard working farm wife. She was actively involved in the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church of Avoca. She was known for her ready laugh and welcoming smile. The coffee pot was always on with a sweet treat on hand to welcome all to sit and enjoy each other's company. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her three children, Allen Onken of Iona, MN, Carol (Loren) Schroer of Brewster, MN and Luann (Jim) Weber of Alexandria, VA; six grandchildren, Christopher Schroer and Nate Schroer of Sioux Falls, SD, Preston (Heather) Schroer of Omaha, NE and John Weber, Nicholas Weber and David Weber all living in Northern Virginia. In addition she leaves two great grandchildren, Kyler and Vada Schroer, children of Preston and Heather.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, William Johnson, Margaret Harberts and Mary Braun.

Graveside services will be 3:00 PM Friday, June 26, 2020 at the Slayton Memorial Gardens in Slayton, MN with her nephew, Steve Johnson officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Avoca Community Center.

The Totzke Funeral Home in Fulda is assisting the family with arrangements.
