Note: Humboldt youth killed in Highway accident

A tragic accident last Friday near Wessington Springs took the life of a Humboldt youth and seriouslay injured four other young people of this community. Instantly killed in the crash was Roger Akkerman, 14 son of Mrs nad Mrs WilliamAkkerman. Also killed in the accident was Mrs. James Ross of IA a passenger in the other vehicle driven by her husband. Passengers in the Humboldt car driven by Paul Dwyer, besides Roger, were Roger's sister Ellen Akkerman, and Paul'ssisters Meriam and Clarann Dwyer children of Rev. and Mrs Kenneth Dwyer.

The accident happened about 8:30 PM at the intersection of Highways 34 and 281 seven miles east of Wessington Springs. Paul Dwyer who attends Central College of McPherson KS, came Thursday and he and the other youths were on their way toattend homecoming festivities at the Wessington Springs Academy. Paul and his sister Clarann were taken to the Sioux Valley hospital. Paul suffered a concussion fractured jaw and leg wounds. Clarann the most seriously injured sustained an injured right eye a fractured jaw and pelvis. At the hospital inWessington Springs are Meriam Dwyer and Ellen Akkerman. Merriam has a cracked jaw, broken collarbone and skull injuties. Ellen received a skull fracture, broken nose and cuts.

Funeral services for Roger Akkerman will be held at 2 PM Thursday at the Feee Methodsit Church in Sioux Falls. Rev Orvin Scandrett will officiate with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Roger Lee Akkerman was born June 22, 1950 at Sioux Falls and lived all his life in the Humboldt community. he was a freshman in Humboldt High School and president of the Free Methodist Youth of Humboldt.

Survivors include his parents Mr and Mrs William Akkerman, 3 sisters Carolyn, Ellen, and Kathleen, Humboldt and one stepbrother Glen of Sioux Falls, and his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. ER Evan of Stacy, MN.
