'Walter and Greta Aukes to Observe Golden Anniversary Walter and Greta Aukes will observe their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Friday, February 20.

"Walter Aukes, 92

Walter Aukes died peacefully on October 28, 2009 in his home, in rural Woden, Iowa, where he was born, which was his expressed desire, after becoming ill in August. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 31 at the First Congregational Church, Buffalo Center, with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Music was furnished by Vera Bronleewe, pianist; George Dobrovolny, violinist; and RickFaber, Jean Faber and Dennis Winke. Honorary bearers were Ray Aukes, Skip Miller, Rollin Aukes, Ken Schutter and Glen Ostrander. Casketbearers were Lindsay Barnes, Bill Aukes, Harlen Stecker, Yeison Arrieta, Matt Charlson, Jim Miller andBlake Smith. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center. The Winter Funeral Home of Buffalo Center was in charge of arrangements.

Walter Aukes was born on February 20, 1917 near Woden, Iowa to Edze and Selma (Daniels) Aukes. He attended Grant Township School No. 4 and graduated from eighth grade at the age of 12. Walter was married to Greta Sleper on February 20,1948 at the Ramsey Reformed Church near Titonka, Iowa. They farmed north of Woden until retiring in 1982. They remained at home on the farm following retirement.

Walter was a life-long member of the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center, which he joined at the age of 17, and where he taught Sunday School for many years. Walter was blessed with the gift of music which he shared with many,especially enjoying entertaining the residents at care centers in the area. He learned to play the harmonica when he was 5 and bought his first Gibson guitar in 1935. Walter continued to sing and entertain with both his guitar andharmonica for the rest of his life. He was passionate about fishing-the anticipation of upcoming fishing trips, the fishing experiences and the stories which grew from these adventures.

He is survived by his wife Greta, and his children Paul (Mary) of Madison Lake, Minnesota; and Pat Barnes of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire and special friend, John Chadwick. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Bill Aukes, Lindsay Barnes,Matt Charlson, Yeison Arrieta, three great-grandchildren, and his sister, Clara Klasse. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, four brothers, Reinder, Ted, Ben and Marvin and two sisters, Mary Dunn and Gladys Heitland."
