Margery(Harken) Schaap was born on January 6, 1906, the oldest of the nine children of Reem t and Ipina (Jansonius) Harken. Although there were nine children, Margery was over 11 year s old before she had a sister.

She started school in a country school in Grundy County, and then went to high school where t he Austinville Cemetery now is, until there was aschool in Austinville. She went to high sch ool in Ackley, riding a passenger train bothmorning and evening, graduating in 1923.

She taught in the country school 3 miles west of Austinville and had as many as 30 students i n a one-room school. She married Peter Schaap in July 1927, and they lived in the small hous e that her parents had first lived in when theymoved to Austinville. Pete had also been tea ching country schools, having taught in the Island Grove School and the school one mile nort h of Austinville.

They lived with and worked for Paul Abkes on the farm south of Austinville for 1 year. The y then moved to Austinville and lived upstairs in the house owned by Pete's parents who live d downstairs. At this time Peter worked for PeterLimburg in the hatchery and selling feed . After a time there, Peter Schaap bought a portable hammermill which was the first one wes t of the Mississippi. This was in 1931. At that time Peter and Margery and family lived sou th ofAustinville on the Ben DeVries farm. Peter's mother died in 1933 and then the family m oved in with Peter's father in the fall of 1933. In 1942 they purchased and moved to an acre age in Aplington. Though little known, when the name was chosen from suggestions offered for a Christian School, Margery was the one who had suggested 'Excelsior Christian.'
