TITONKA - A funeral service for Gertrude M. Sleper, 91, of Titonka, was held Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at the United Methodist Church in Titonka at 2 p.m. with Pastor Robin Thomas. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at thechurch. Interment followed at the Buffalo Township Cemetery in rural Titonka. Gertrude died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at the Titonka Care Center in Titonka. Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of Titonka in charge of arrangements,

"Gertrude M. Sleper, 91 Funeral services for Gertrude M. Sleper, 91, were held Wednesday, August 5 at Titonka United Methodist Church with Pastor Robin Thomas officiating. Music was furnished by Mary Lou Gruhn, organist and soloist Jonathan Chambers.Casketbearers wer her great-grandsons, Jared Taylor, Jace Taylor, Nathan Chambers, Ryann Pearson, Brandon Pearson and Stefan Chambers. Honorary bearers were her great-granddaughters, Lauren Chambers, Lexie Smidt and Nicole Smidt. Interment was in Buffalo Township Cemetery, rural Titonka. The Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of Titonka was in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude Mae Sleper was born on February 28, 1918, near Titonka, Iowa to William and Teda Tjarks Welhousen. She attended country school near Titonka and graduated from the Titonka High School in 1936. Gertrude then attended the Iowa StateTeacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Gertrude was married to Evert Sleper on February 22, 1939, at her parents' home near Titonka. The couple moved to a farm north of Titonka and farmed there until they retired in 1984 and moved into Titonka.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Titonka. She enjoyed ballroom dancing and square dancing and belonged to the Titonka Square Dancing Club. She also enjoyed playing cards and belonged to couples and ladies card clubs.

Gertrude loved life on the farm and raised a large garden and canned and froze many fruits and vegetables. She loved growing flowers and was very proud of her Christmas cactus. The grandchildren loved visiting grandma's house in thesummer. They loved picking raspberries and strawberries, going to the German Valley General Store for special treats and getting into grandma's special drawer for peppermint candy.

Gertrude became a resident of the Titonka Care Center in 2003. She died there on Monday, August 3, 2009. Surviving are her children, Gary (Jeriene) Sleper, Titonka, Gayle (Larry) Pearson, Wesley and Russel Sleper, Titonka. Also survivingare five grandchildren, Jeri Ann Taylor, Paula (Jon) Chambers, Randy (Carrie) Pearson, Pamela (Scott) Smidt, Terry Pearson and two step-grandchildren, Mike (Dee) Maschoff and Lisa (Brian) Escherich. She is also survived by ninegreat-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren, her brother, John (Amy) Boehm, Clear Lake, Iowa and sister-in-law, Madge Welhousen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Evert, daughter-in-law, Sandy Sleper, granddaughter, Sandra Sleper, son-in-law, Dennis Cruise, 2 brothers, Wilbur and Herman Welhousen and 4 sisters, Jeannette Krause, Ella Eden Beenken, Anna Schutjer and Delores Bode."
