De burgemeester van Middelburg De Bordes spoort op 14 mei de Joodse plaatsgenoten, zoals Louis en echtgenote Rika Louise van Os , aan om de laatste boot naar Breskens te nemen en een goed heenkomen te zoeken in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, België of Frankrijk.

Na de capitulatie van het Nederlandse leger op 15 mei 1940 komen Walcheren en Zeeuws-Vlaanderen onder Frans militair gezag te staan. Daar komt een eind aan als op 17 mei de binnenstad van Middelburg, inclusief de Markt met de vleeshouwerij van Louis Leijdesdorff, wordt verwoest. Louis en Rika Louise zoeken en vinden een tijdelijk onderkomen in het huis aan de Vlasmarkt 19.

In deze dagen breekt het optimisme van Louis. Samen met Rika Louise besluit hij om zelfmoord te plegen. Ze nemen dodelijke middelen in en wachten hun einde af. De buren vermoeden onraad en komen polshoogte nemen. Onverwijld roepen ze de hulp in van huisarts Feikema. Die is snel ter plaatse en, indachtig de beroepseed die hij heeft afgelegd, begint hij onmiddellijk met alles wat nodig is om het echtpaar weer terug te brengen in het leven.

Tijdelijk zo zou blijken want op 29 juni 1943 zijn Louis en Rika Louise vanuit Kamp Westerbork op transport gesteld naar concentratiekamp Sobibór (Biala Podleska-PL) en direct na aankomst aldaar op 02 juli 1943 alsnog vermoord.
