Question/answer » What do I write in the title and description of a photo?

A photo without explanation says little. In fifty years nobody will know who is in it. The title and the description make your photo valuable. They also make sure the photo can be found with the search function.

The title

Short and clear. For example: Wedding photo Jan de Vries and Anna Bakker, 1952.

The description

Write down what you know:

  • Who: the names of the persons, from left to right.
  • Where: the place, the street, the house.
  • When: the year or the date, even if you are not sure.
  • What: the occasion. A wedding, a school photo, a birthday.
  • Origin: which album it comes from or who gave you the photo.

For a document you can type out the text. Then the content is searchable.

Linking persons

Is your archive linked to your publication on Genealogy Online? Then you can type a name in the description and link it to the person in your family tree.
