Born in York District, South Carolina, most probably at the home of her parents George and Margaret Lee Wylie Ratchford, the eldest of two known daughters and five known sons. Her grandparents are all believed to have been born in northern Ireland, with County Antrim known for the maternal grandparents.

Her husband served in the South Carolina State Assembly and in the U. S. Congress from 1869 to 1877 but little else has been found specifically about this mother of eight of whom six survived to adult age and marriage.
