Mary Melinda VanMatre was a small redhaired woman. She raised her fourchildren and then one of her grandchildren. Her life was long and full.She married Jim Scott when she was eighteen years old and he wastwentynine. They spent the next fifty-three years together until he diedon their anniversary in 1945.
They lived in many places in southern California including Upland, Chino,Redlands, San Fernando, Lemon Cove, Creston, Porterville, and PasoRobles.
They liked to play cards and enjoyed the company of friends and family.They lived on small farms, chicken ranches, and citrus orchards. Marywould plant flowers at each of there new places. She had a Hadley Rosethat was red that she cut slips of and took with her each time she moved.She also raised African violets in her house. She was very active all herlife.
She baked wonderful lemon merangue pies and cooked and baked for herchildren and grand children and great grand children.
HILLCREST CEMETERY, Porterville, Tulare, CA was established in 1930 andis known for its park like effect as the lawns are smooth and unbroken,all the headstone are sunken.
