Issac Sobispo VanMatre was a farmer born in Arkansas. He moved toCalifornia from Texas when he was in his teen years. In 1870 he wasshown in the San Diego County California Census as a 23 year old Teamsterliving with his brother and sister they were living in the community ofJulian.

Julian was a gold rush town that was founded in 1869.

He Married Permelia Jane Hickey 20 Oct 1870. Permelia's parents werenatives of Tennessee. They were Issac Hickey b. 29 May 1819 and MalindaJane Marshall b. 12 Apr 1823. They were married about 1838 and moved fromTennessee to Panola, Mississippi in about 1840. Their son John Henry wasborn in Mississippi and they moved to Arkansas where their daughter SarahEmaline was born. In 1846 they moved to Titus County, Texas wherePermelia was born 6 Aug 1852 along with nine of her siblings. In 1864they started across the plaines for California on the Butterfield Trail.They arrived in San Bernardino, California in 1865 where they lived in ElMonte for a year or two then moved to the Rincon District between Chinoand Corona. Issac Hickey was a Baptist minister.
