As a near relative took an active part in the arrangements at the marriage of James IV, with Margaret Tudor; being rewarded on the same day (the 8th of August 1503) with the earldom of Arran, the Gaelic-speaking island in the Forth of Clyde on which the family then made their home at Brodick Castle.  He was a nobleman of great accomplishments. He took part in a naval expedition against the Swedes in 1502 and at a tournament held in 1508 he was the champion archer on foot or horse in all of Scotland.
