HAROLD C. MONTANYE
Canajoharie - Mr. Harold C. Montanye, 78, of Walnut Street, died at home on February 16, 2003, after a long illness with his family by his side.
He was born in the town of Root, the son of Ezra and Lefa Montanye. He married Anna Mae Leamon on October 3, 1945. Mr. Montanye lived in Canajoharie most of his life and graduated from Canajoharie High School, being recognized in the TriValley Armed Force Day Celebration. He was a WWII Army veteran serving on DDay, in which he took part in the invasion and liberation of France. Mr. Montanye was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation for 37 1/2 years. Upon retirement, he worked part time for the Canajoharie Central School District as a custodian. Mr. Montanye was a member of the Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Department for 34 years and later a member of the Canajoharie Exempts. He was a member of the American Legion Post 222 for 53 years, serving as post commander and treasurer for several and past commander for the Montgomery County American Legion. He was also a member of the Last Man's Club, CanjoharieFort Plain Elks Lodge #2621, where he was Elk of the Year, a member of Hamilton Masonic Lodge #79 in Canajoharie, and life member of the VFW #6921 of Harrington, DE. He was a member of the Schenectady Rose Society and the American Rose Society. Mr. Montanye was trustee of his church, the Canajoharie United Methodist Church. He enjoyed working on cars, doing farm work, and his many activities with the legion and fire department; also camping, traveling, growing roses in his rose garden, and enjoying the many visits with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed.
Mr. Montanye is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anna Montanye; five daughters, Nancy Erwin of Blades, DE, Linda Burgess of Fort Plain, Virginia Mattice of Winston Salem, NC, Connie Dingman of Canajoharie, and Brenda Krutz of Stone Arabia, NY; three sons, David Montanye of Palatine Bridge, Clifford Montanye, Sr., and Brian Montanye, both of Canajoharie; 19 grandchildren; 22 greatgrandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Montanye was predeceased by one brother, Frank D. Montanye in 1994.
The family will received friends and relatives from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2003, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Farmer of the Canajoharie United Methodist Church & and the Rev. R. W. Williams, Chaplain of Hospice, officiating.
